Nest Boxes Plans:

It would be best if you embarked on this project in collaboration with a local barn owl group. Bear in mind that as we have not visited the site and have never met, that any risks/liabilities are all yours.  If you do put up a nest box in Cheshire please let us know, if elsewhere then again please advise any local barn owl conservation group; this information is vital to such groups in their quest to to help save the barn owl.

Having got that out of the way...

You should be able to find enough information on our website regarding habitat requirements but if you need further information then please feel free to Contact us. At the moment only external nest box plans are available on the internet and the required links are shown below.  If when viewing the plans you right click on the image & select "Save As" from the menu that pops up you will be able to save the image. You should then be able to print to the original scale of 1:10mm which conveniently fits on a sheet of A4 in portrait mode.   Site conditions dictate erecting method but it's something like:

  • Prior to erecting the box buy two 12"-18" hinges, the cheap ones you see on shed doors and fix these vertically at each bottom corner.
  • Remove the front panel.
  • The hole in the top of the back board is for fastening a rope to haul the box into place (12' minimum height).
  • When the box is in place use 3 x 6" nails through the back board to fix the box to the trunk.
  • Fix the front panel in place.
  • Swing the hinges against the trunk and put two 1.5" nails through two convenient holes in each long arm of the hinges to stabilise the box.
  • Don't forget to look after the safety of yourself & others and use suitable equipment.
  • Crude but it works a treat.

You should now have everything you need, please let us know how you go on.
